Phil Levermore: Gibraltar to Beirut – The Slow Way

    7.00 for 7.30pmWychwood Golf Club

When CNYC member, Phil Levermore, set-off from Gibraltar in the spring of 2005 in ‘Scandal’, his 10.5m Scanmar 345, he knew which was his ultimate port of arrival, but had only a hazy idea of how he was going to get there, and even less of the journey, with its highs and its lows, that lay ahead.  Twelve years later, Phil and Scandal arrived in Beirut having, very slowly, explored many of the sights, sailing areas, coasts and ports of 14 countries in-between.
Phil’s talk covers his motivation for this slow-motion journey and the pleasures and pitfalls of his slow approach to sailing.  Reflecting on 12 years cruising down the Mediterranean, Phil offers some practical observations on how to choose sailing destinations, the sailing costs involved, the vagaries of European air travel, dealing with officialdom and, as importantly, how to sail successfully with infants, children and young adults.  (Spoiler – young adults are the most challenging).  He’ll also offer some personal and, therefore, highly subjective, views on the Med’s best sailing areas, the differing national attitudes towards sailing and on the pros and cons of ‘slow’ sailing.
