    7 for 7:30Wychwood

As last year we are combining the formal AGM with a full speaker meeting. Sam LLewelyn will take us on a cruise among the string of sub-tropical gardens slung from the Helford River via Scilly to Ireland and the west coast of Scotland, and will be a lot more nautical than horticultural.

Sam was born on Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, where his mother’s family have made one of the great gardens of the world. He has spent years cruising the west coasts of Britain in sailing boats large and small. He has written large numbers of sea thrillers and many other works of fiction, mostly on maritime subjects, for adults and children. He is a columnist for Practical Boat Owner, the RYA and Hortus, Editor of the Marine Quarterly, and as we know from his last visit to CNYC a compelling and entertaining speaker.

In 2016 Julian and Alison Cable completed an anti-clockwise circumnavigation of Ireland, in Robinetta, their 22’6” LOA wooden gaff cutter. They took nearly eight weeks to complete this cruise, starting and finishing in Strangford Lough.
This is an excerpt from their log:
Robinetta is a 22’6” LOA wooden gaff cutter launched in 1937. She has 6’ standing headroom and an 8’ beam, making her more suitable for extended cruising than most boats her size. Her bluff bows, extreme tumble-home and raked transom make her look a little like a tiny Galway hooker and give her the same ability to ride a following sea. Unlike a hooker she has deep long keel and is well ballasted, making her extremely stiff. Her designer and first owner was Denys Rayner, who later co-founded Westerly Marine and designed their early boats including the Westerly 22 of which over 300 were built and many are still in commission. Robinetta can be thought of as an early prototype.
