Hugh Woodsend – Adriatic and back 2019

    6:30 pmZoom

The talk is centred around a month-long cruise made in April 2019 from Liverpool to the Adriatic and back and calling at many of the ports along the way. A film was made of the whole trip, and we dive in and out of this film throughout the talk. Although we will be following the route, we shall spend time picking out highlights, many of which relate directly to sailing.

We sailed the first part of the trip through a major depression centred over the Mediterranean, enjoying winds of 60kts plus in the Bay of Biscay and the Messina straits, but eventually things calmed down and we had a wonderful time exploring the magnificent Adriatic coastline. No-one in their right mind would choose to visit Venice on Good Friday, but actually it turned out well, and we had an amusing incident just before leaving. A fabulous visit to the Lipica Stud horse near Koper, where the famous Vienna Lipizzaner horses have been bred for more than 400 years.

A couple of days in Split heading south and our return is via Dubrovnik where we have fun mooring tenders in the heavy swell. Then south again to Malta, once home to the mighty Mediterranean Fleet between the wars, and we remember Malta from those days. Malta is also host to the Middle Sea Race round Sicily, and we remind ourselves of the race. Then its making our way back home via Ibiza, Malaga & Lisbon. We complete the month with a magical cruise in flat calm conditions through Biscay and back to Liverpool. It remains to be seen if cruising will return in this form.
